(Tammy Forbes) I always drive smaller cars so I use 12’s ones that can take small boxes and high power so I can use multiple subs in one big ported box tuned around 32htz! Or that’s what my current is tuned at I have had cars that where tuned to 45htz but they did big numbers but didn’t play the Lowe’s very good! These days we want the opposite we want the crazy windy 20htz bass at 150db or more! I blew one of my dust caps off a while back had my window down didn’t think about my subs being decoupled and popped it right off but I super glued it back and it still works perfect 3 years later! Rusty at DC audio said to send them to him and he would put all XL coils, cones, and all other soft parts and and change my baskets to the newer models basically mailing them like custom XL lvl4’s all painted and fixed up! I want to add another DC audio 2k and use one per sub as all my other channels have their own channel active ram from a DSP! It’s get ridiculously loud for 2 12’s on 2k! I had my box built slightly bigger so they would be for efficient amd than bang just got to keep the windows up so they don’t over exert themselves. I have the sub Sonic set to 20htz but that only does so much when there banging hard!

(Suth TokCraew) what happen when port size are too big ? im order custom sub box from online and now have a mistake port size are too big 4inch width & 14inch height and around 20inch+/- length, box size is : 27inch W @ 15.5inch H @ 15inch D + 12inch Jbl stadium 1224 subwoofer 500watts rms & 12mm xmax + running on monoblock kenwood 500watts rms too, manufacturer recommended box volume is 2.5 ft³ . sorry im beginner, im prefer to Louder Bass, not too low freq but ok if this box can get a loud bass

(JetBangDink) I know it's late, but just so you know if you ever see this. Anything around 12 ply is usually cheap Chinese sheets. Domestic ply or preferably Canadian ply will be much less more around 6. I actually just built a box for 2 12's at about 4ft3 35hz out of high quality particle. I'm a cabinet maker so I have access to 100k table saws and all the material :D

Cant remember the name of those wood sheets but its obviously the ones that are like scrap wood jamed in the middle of several very thin "sheets" of other wood, I know that because a sheet of this wood is made up of several much thinner sheets glued together that especially with lots of shock or vibrations (Aka the definition of a Subwoofer box! lol) it Will & does "separate" as its definitely not made for that type or environment. Not to mention working with it is horrible as we can see how bad its "splintered" etc! U use to save money? is it scrap? WHY not MDF etc?

(Donald Sharp) I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but they make an attachment that goes on your router that makes cutting round holes easy and perfectly round, I'm an old bass head, love your enthusiasm for the car audio guys!

(Jerry Williamson) A slight improvement I might recommend would be to predrill the screw holes with a 1/16" bit about half the length of the screw into the plywood. This will eliminate the problem of splitting that you encountered at 18:56. Additionally, you can also pre-drill a countersink to further reduce the risk of splitting and allow you to get the screw head below the surface. Optionally after that, you can fill in the hole above the screw head with filler and sand flush. The technique to fill in the split with PVA and sawdust is textbook. Nice recovery. As for the amount of glue you use, go check out James King on his King's Fine Woodworking channel and he will tell you that once you think you have enough glue, still add some more! :) Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA) (commercially known as Titebond III) is by far *the* *best* *choice* for gluing plywoods or any time of laminate. Overall this is an excellent effort and this was a joy to watch. Great woodworking skills and exceptionally well-detailed explanation of everything you were doing and why.

(Abiel pangga) that is a large box for a 28hz ish tuning, maybe next time make the port smaller while still being the same depth. iirc people in forums say if you tune your box low, you dont need as big of a port. take the jtr cap 4000, it is tuned to 10hz and the port is very small (maybe even smaller then this one) with 218 in the box. if you make the port smaller, you might be able to get a 20hz maybe even lower tuning.

(Po Tato) quarter the way through and extremely jelly that your friend helped with the table saw. my $21 HF jigsaw with scroll blade was awful and it was my first time making rip cuts and with a power tool! Lesson: wrong jigsaw blade, ditch the homemade guide and focus on the drawn line. Still, uneven cuts seemed to seal nicely at 28x14x14. I'm old so my amp tuning is around 55% full tilt lol. Tip: check out the port area calc on SMD forum for even tonality from 25-100hz. Wasn't planning my 2cubed to be nearly 17" deep but it worked out.

(Snowwie) I wish you Americans stepped off that imperial system of inches and feet, the rest of the world does not like it, is used to the metric system, and by all means, your target audience would be much greater if you switched to the metric system. Also you can work more detailed with the metric system since a centimeter is a factor of 2.5 smaller than an inch, making measurements way more accurate. But great video though. :-)

(Brandon Lee) SUGGESTION 4 A VIDEO: How to add a new baffle onto an existing box without dismantling anything! WHY?: For those who have stripped all of their subs screw holes, for those who need more box flexing support, for those needing deeper baffles for longer sub mounting screws, for those switching from square subs to round subs or vice versa, for those wanting to change the look of the front of their box/enclosure, and so on. I know I'm needing to do this because T-Nuts chewed up my MDF and so I'd like to add a 1/2" piece of PVC/ABS and install Threaded Inserts into the new baffle while sandwhiching the threaded inserts in between the old and new baffles. But you could use a 3/4" or 1" new baffle made out of quality wood and teach us how to effectively attach the new baffle to the old baffle while painting or wrapping it to match your vehicle's interior or something interesting/helpful like that.

I have had done builds that I have been just short of target do to space limits and poly made it work poly can make the unworkable work.

I plan on integrating the mono block amps and the 4 channel amp behind the seats for airflow maybe fastened to the box itself. I’m not really needing to see the woofer facing forward as the amps will need to be cooled by fresh air and/or AC unit. I’ll be using both mono blocks on the sub one per coil and figure there probably going to get pretty warm but hopefully not I.D.K. Maybe u could play around with a few ideas and make a video about it.

(Kohn Futner) Oddly I don't even have to screw in my (Dayton Reference) subs into the box. Soon, I'll be getting an Ultimax. My subs don't vibrate or have box noise. They point straight up at my ceiling so I guess the weight of the speaker and the tightness of the lip holds it in. I couldn't get the sub out once I put it in without bopping it against the floor. So 4" baffles, meh. I only left the subs loose so I can paint the boxes when the weather gets better and to mess around with audio treatments inside of the boxes.

I didn't think the dust was any worse than with ply either. Only thing that was tougher was that I had to be more careful putting screws in so I didn't split the material.

(Skyloop) Could bass loosen the fuelline in the engine bay? I got a Renault laguna 2 and since i installed an amplifier my car it started to stink when it was running. At first the smell of fuel started to appear when I heared loud music and then every time I started the engine and drove a bit. Now my car just turned off while standing at a traffic light and I can't turn it on and it stinks so heavy. I just wanna know if this ever happend to you. My setup is nothing special just a random amp with a random sub in a random ported box. It's not tuned so it sounds not so good but for some songs this sub really shines despite the price of 10 euros ( the sub ). I found it on a flea market. I really don't know if it's called flea market in the us but this is what google told me it's called. Basiclly it's a place where people come to sell their stuff they have lying around and don't need anymore. The box was full of mold so I dumped it. I build a lot of speakers and subs and the measured tuning freq are always wrong .. u could use the simple method of a tone generator.. go from 10hz up by 1 hz at a time.. and observe the cone... at the tuning frequenci it will have like zero movement.. u will get a surprise..

The idea that MDF is the one material to rule them all comes mainly from hi-fi and full-range speakers - when you get into the world of prosound, MDF is not only a heavier option than quality birch plywood, it is also less durable and does not hold up to use and transportation.

(kyle3420) I use MDF all the time. I like it because it sands really well and I can make it do what I want it to, and its cheap. BUUUUUT it is definitely not the best for making speaker enclosures. What you want to look for is overall strength and something else just as important which is the dampening factor of the wood, or how easily the vibrations die off in the panels. I've used 18mm (approx 3/4") Russian baltic birch and it is very nice, very strong, and has really good sound properties. The problem is that its 2-3 times the price as MDF. But there are even better plywoods than Baltic Birch. They are usually categorized as "Marine Grade" plywoods that use an adhesive that resists wetting and the veneer plys are top quality with barely any knots or none at all. They are superior to MDF in every way EXCEPT for the cost. Expect to pay well over $100 per sheet.

(1980JPA) the actual wood used matters less than whatever dampening you use for the box. plywood plus dampening mat is fine. also depends on if you're just building a sub box, or a pair of full range speakers. resonance is always an issue, so dampening and bracing matters more than the material.

But then again, if you overdo thickness of plywood, go for it. (jasonneal) The problem with plywood is at certain frequencies could and usually vibrates the plies apart causing unwanted noise in your enclosure. If the plywood didn’t get glue in places you can’t see from the mill, your going to hear it, Usually at low volume. Yes MDF creates a lot of dust, but it is more dense and you can get cleaner shapes. Back in the 80’s people used plywood, then particle board, then MDF.

(william killingsworth) When you router the sharpie line around 25:00 use the discarded center cut out from the baffle, you can use it support the router so it doesn’t wobble. Notch it and put it back in the hole with a longer piece that spans the hole using clamps to hold it in place and u can rest the router on it. Also us can use the center hole and circle jig so u get a cleaner/perfect edge. 😉 hopefully that makes sense.

(Incorporeal) Liked watching that build and Wesley's face at the end says it all. The box obviously hit the right spot for him. But next time you use a router like that clamp a piece of timber on the side of the box to give the router bed something more substantial to rest on.

(Soniclab) I use Baltic birch for anything that will be used for outdoors. I cut tons of MDF and Baltic ply in my cnc shop. Both have advantages and disadvantages... I like both and both sound great. Birch ply is a bit more resonant. We mainly use ply for PA cabinets to save weight... less weight means you can bring more subs in the truck.

(SethH88) Mdf is objectively better. If you use plywood only use extremely high quality plywood that isn't going to be rough and nasty. Then you can stain it and it will look really good.

(Joe) I use 15 ply birch myself. Weights a fraction of what mdf does and sounds just as good, needless to say it makes a much smaller mess. I also use that app, paid for the premium version, Ill use it to get some ideas then run it through Win ISD Pro, to see the tuning, air velocity etc etc.

(DIY Audio Guy) Whenever I laminate sheets of plywood together like that I start off by oversizing them at least a quarter of an inch because they drift around during the glue up. After the glue sets I take it back to saw to cut to final size. Glad to see that you do the same.

(MSTR-RPTR) I have built speakers out of MDF and plywood. Both work good but I prefer plywood. It handles screws much better and is more resistant to damage overall.

(Eric Marcus) I built my home cabinets in Shot Class out of 3/4" Birch Plywood back in '92. Everyone thought I was krazy until they herd them. Hell, one of my classmates wanted me to help him with a slant face sub box for his hatchback and we made that out of Birch. He didn't even cover it, he left it all natural. I guess that was a too long explanation on trying to say. Birch Ply is just fine in my book.
